Southside Showcase Preview 2022

The Southside Showcase enters its 8 year this Saturday as a loaded field takes the court at Benidle St. Margarets.  This showcase has been the home of some very talented players over the years, who have gone on to play at all levels of College basketball.  This Southside Showcase Preview outlines the talented teams and players playing in this primetime event.

 

Minneapolis South v North St. Paul

The new look Tigers are led by legendary Coach Joe Hyser. Sharpshooter Poet Davis is the Tigers returning leading scorer. 2nd year coach Cornelius Gilleylen continues to his rebuild. The Polars have an athletic group of players led by Jazayah Gate.

#5AAA Benilde-St. Margaret’s v #16AAA Richfield:

The host team comes in with an exciting group of young talent. Led by Nationally Ranked player Jalen Wilson. Look for Jayden Daisey and Jaleel Doleny amongst others to be major contributers. The #16 ranked Spartans have plenty to be excited about this season. Led by CJ Armstrong, along with Jalen and Zavier Hayes Richfield will bring it every night.

#17AAAA Moorhead v Spring Lake Park

Moorhead is led by MSU-Moorhead commit Adam Jenkins. Along with Dylan Zimmerman the Spuds will be preseason favorites to return to state our of section 8AAAA. Long time Assistant Oliver Major finally gets his opportunity after the retirement of Hall of Fame Coach Grant Cuzy. The Panthers have some pieces to build around led by their big man Beau Johnson. Freddie Anthony, Mikey Say, and Brock Remme will see and increased roll.

#14AAA Hermantown v Minneapolis Edison

Hermantown are the returning favorites in section 7AAA after making a State Tournament appearance a season ago. Led by dynamic scorer Keaton Christianson and a veteran group Coach Fenske has a group hungry to return to state. Minneapolis Edison is arguably the most underrated team in the state. Led my legendary Coach Ahmil Jihad and his tenacious defensive mentality along with a talented group of players the Tommies are primed for breakouts season and a legit chance to with the Minneapolis City Conference. They are led by Do-it-All Sr. Micah Young and guards Deidrick Taylor and Legend Wright the Tommies will be up for any challenge.

#7 Columbia Heights v #10 St. Cloud Tech

This is a rematch of last year’s game in the Southside Showcase. Coach Braziel comes in with a young team looking to the continue the winning tradition at Columbia Heights. They will be led by juniors Jency Davis, Boona Morke, and Randy McClenden. 2nd year Coach Don Ferguson is back after leading the Tigers to a State Tournament birth and a 4th place finish. Led by Tameron Ferguson who is one of the top guards in the class of 2024 look for the Tigers, who play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in AAA to primed for a return to State.

Eagan v Minneapolis Washburn

This is the season Eagan has been building for. The trio of Emmanual Schmitter, Oscar Khazon, and Austin Carruthers have been in the varsity rotation since their freshman and sophomore years. Always competitive this is the Wildcats year to take that next step and compete in section 3AAAA. Myles Sheppard takes over as the Head Coach at Washburn. The Millers have plenty to build around including Kyle Jorgensen, who is one of the most versatile bigs in 2024 class. 

St. Louis Park v Minneapolis Southwest.

St. Louis Park as the unofficial home team by crossing Hwy. 100 to Benilde. Led by double-digit scorer Stefano Giovannelli and PG Keegan Hartford the Orioles are always well prepared. Mpls. Southwest is the darkhorse to win the Minneapolis City Conference. Led by Seniors Cade Sullivan and Dillion Engan along with sharpshooter Liam Farniok the Lakers are cable of catching fire at any given time.
